Some introductory text. (Perhaps making the point that many studies show that we tend to be biased).

On this page are several visualizations that can help you within your country and . We use data from the World Bank. You can read more about this data, its strengths, and limitations, at the bottom of this page.

To learn about how your income compares to those around the world, fill out the three boxes below:

Your place in the global income distribution

The chart below shows how your income compares with the incomes of people around the world. Imagine if everyone in the world lined up, ordering themselves from poorest to richest. The world’s population of 7.9 billion are then split into 100 equal sized groups, or ‘percentiles’ — 7.9 million in each. In the chart, there is one blue column for each of the 100 percentile groups. The height of the bars show the average income among each.

About this data

A mix of income and consumption data.

Sensitivity at the top. We can’t be sure exactly how much of the distribution this affects, or by how much. This is the subject of a lot of research (link). In the chart, the top percentiles aren’t plotted for this reason, though we use the survey data to work out your ranking.

Incomes across world regions

This second chart presents the same information as before in a different way. It also shows a breakdown by world region.

The dotted red line plots your income. The areas falling to the left of the line show how many people have an income lower than yours in each region. The areas to the right show the how many people have a higher income than yours. These are also shown as percentages in the bar chart.
